We use an IP that is converted to Pass upon completion of the thesis and successful defense. It is assumed that the research advisor is keeping tabs on the progress of the student. Upon completion of the thesis, I often go in and draft a memo to our Registrar’s office to change any outstanding IP grades to Pass grades.

Grades for thesis and dissertation hours here are handled just as Nancy describes.
Our thesis/dissertation hours are assigned to instructor of record (so there are multiple sections in each department/subject) and all are satisfactory/ unsatisfactory. The IOR must post the final grade.
