Ramu,
We have a similar system and use "IP" (In Progress) which all gets converted to "P" (Pass) or a letter grade at the end. The thesis/dissertation advisor is supposed to keep tabs on student progress.

Subject: [La-cgs] Grades for thesis and dissertation courses
Dear LA-CGS members:
At Louisiana Tech, graduate students in the thesis (master's degrees) or dissertation tracks get an "I" grade for those hours until the thesis/dissertation is submitted. At that point, the required number of thesis/dissertation hours are converted to "S" (current term and past terms). Is that how you all handle it? Usually the "instructor" for these courses is the associate dean in the colleges who often has no idea how well or poorly the student is progressing.
Best regards,
Ramu
