[La-cgs] Transcripts

Matthew,
The UL System moved away from the requirement of submitting every single transcript. This was done a couple of years ago as the process was cumbersome, with some students having to produce 20+ transcripts. The LCGS strongly advocated for the change and the UL system changed that policy.
At ULM we have had many students with 20+ transcripts. It was a nightmare to collect them and also for the student to put in the effort of sending them. We lost several students because of the transcript requirement.
Regards,
Sushma

Matthew,
As part of the LSU system, we too at LSUS are dealing with this issue. Getting all transcripts has been an issue, especially in cases where a student attended a one-off course somewhere that has no bearing on the admission decision. It is also a problem for some international students – we have had cases where the previous institution does not exist anymore or where records are not retrievable for various reasons.
I recall the UL system got a change through their board a few years ago that dealt with this. Mary Farmer-Kaiser can tell you more about that. Maybe the LSU system can also study our current process and see if any changes are required.

John, we ask about a history of disciplinary problems via self-report, currently with applicants acknowledging they can be dismissed if the information they provide in their application is later found to be incomplete or inaccurate.
Mary, as I understand it, verification of academic standing at those non-degree institutions and financial aid considerations are not a part of our admissions process. I can appreciate though that there is probably variability in what factors are considered for graduate admission at the graduate school level across institutions.

We too have been trying to streamline it, but have been told that all transcripts are needed to inform the institution of any disciplinary problems that may need to be investigated. Primarily incidents in violation of Title IX.

Good afternoon, Matthew,
Thank you for your response and I truly appreciate the effort to streamline the graduate school application process. While this approach may offer practical benefits, I’d like to raise a couple of questions for discussion:
1. How would an institution verify academic standing at non-degree-granting institutions if transcripts are not required?
1. Could this change impact financial aid processing, particularly in cases where prior academic history is relevant to aid eligibility or compliance?
Thanks for bringing this shift in practice to the forefront. Even on a Monday afternoon, thoughtful policy makes its way forward—one transcript at a time. 🎓
Regards,
Mary Edith😈

Good morning,
We require all transcripts currently at LSU A&M, but we have a proposal in from our Assistant Dean of Recruiting and Admissions (rationale below) to change this to only institutions where a degree was earned. It seems like more institutions have moved/our moving in that direction. The current requirement really bogs us down and slows our ability to get applications to departments for their decisions.
"Currently, we require transcripts from all institutions where an applicant was enrolled. Historically, this was the standard in the Graduate Admissions world because students could not collect transcripts from institutions where they owed money or loans. In recent years, the government lifted that requirement and now institutions are forbidden from holding transcripts even if a student has defaulted on federal loans (private or University funds not included).
Reducing the minimum University requirement to only require “transcripts from an institution where a degree was earned” has many benefits.
1. Money savings - Many transcripts cost about $15 to send.
2. Option to send additional transcripts - A student may still send supplemental transcripts if they wish and if they would like to have transfer credits considered from the institution.
3. Saving time in the admission process - Graduate Admissions would not have to record each transcript and wait on applicants to send all transcripts.
Adopting this request would update the requirement to be that applicants only need to send transcripts from institutions where a degree was earned. Ultimately, this is the minimum University requirement and what many peer institutions state as the minimum requirement."

Greetings!
I know we have addressed this before, but am not sure where we stand now.
Do you require all transcripts sent before you make admissions decisions or can a decision be made without transcripts from all institutions?
Thanks,
John
