Thanks, Mary!  Another example of the generosity and team spirit of this group!

On the topic of compensation, I wanted to add that our policy of compensating faculty for program director duties is a relatively recent phenomenon.  It used to be considered service and a form of recognition.  I sense there has been a culture shift with more faculty expecting monetary or other compensation for anything that is not strictly required, including for activities such as supervising theses and dissertations.

Quick note to say thank you to everyone who has replied so far. This has been very helpful information, and I'm afraid that I didn't get an individual message to everyone. I have been gathering responses from other colleagues from outside of Louisiana and will take care to share what I've been able to compile later this month--need to get through CSGS and the UL System meetings.

Sorry for the delayed reply.  Historically, all graduate coordinators received either a stipend or course release (depending upon department needs).  The actual dollar amount varied based on size of enrollment, level of program, and base salary of faculty.  Because of the budget crisis, all funding was cut at the end of fall semester so coordinators only received half a year of compensation.

The SUBR graduate school has a paid Coordinator of Graduate Admissions position.  Some SUBR graduate programs  have graduate coordinators that are not paid positions.  Faculty that serve in this role may or may not receive release time.  In most case, it is counted as service in the department.

We too offer release time.  A one course (3 hours) fall /spring, and one course in the summer (3 hours).

AT LSUS, we have graduate program directors and, separately, graduate coordinators, the latter being admin staff positions that support a specific program. Program directors are faculty, and they receive a combination of course downloads and stipends depending on the number of students in the program.

Good Morning,

We currently do not offer compensation to Graduate Coordinators, other than adding those responsibilities to their job description and allowing for release from other duties.  We are considering ways to formally compensate and acknowledge their administrative responsibilities to the School of Graduate Studies.  This is a goal, and we are not there yet.  I'd be very interested in hearing any updates that you may make at ULL - as well as knowing what everyone else does.

We are currently trying to get any service to the Graduate School to be more formally acknowledged in their primary appointment - particularly in the School of Medicine.  Since the SoM has a diverse faculty, many of them are not members of the Graduate Faculty, but rather serve the clinical enterprise. Faculty efforts in the Graduate School are not equally appreciated across various Departments.
