[La-cgs] [EXTERNAL SENDER] Re: Grad Course Faculty Qualifications

Hi all,

I want to add that in addition to educational credentials, there are research requirements for graduate faculty, which vary by program and college. For example, in some departments at LSUS, the criterion is three refereed publications in five years. Others focus more on grants and presentations. Art or performance-based achievements are also recognized in the humanities.

Sanjay

Chris,

I’m attaching the Graduate Faculty policy at UNO. It does have criteria to be part of the graduate faculty related to degree held by the faculty member. As a point of clarification, while graduate faculty teach graduate level courses, not all faculty who teach graduate courses are classified as graduate faculty. We have some adjuncts who we certify to teach graduate courses but they do not hold graduate faculty status because of the other responsibilities those graduate faculty hold. For example, we might determine someone lacks a terminal degree but they have sufficient work and professional experience to teach a graduate course in something like health care management but they are adjunct faculty and we aren’t going to make them graduate faculty since that would make them eligible to serve on dissertation committees.

I hope that helps and didn’t muddy the waters. As the person who is working to address the qualifications of 55 faculty who SACSCOC off site review questioned, I would HIGHLY suggest you have a very clear policy and FOLLOW it. They are pretty tough on people teaching grad classes without terminal degrees unless you have a ton of documented justification.

Nancy

Hi Chris,

I don't believe there's a specific UL System policy, but I know there's a SACSCOC requirement. I'm not sure if this is the most up-to-date guidance, but this SACSCOC guidance document is one that we've used pretty regularly (enough that I have it bookmarked) when evaluating faculty credentials: https://sacscoc.org/app/uploads/2019/07/faculty-credentials.pdf.

Nancy at UNO would be a great resource if you need more info.

Does anyone know what the UL System requirements are for faculty to teach a graduate-level course? We have a factly member that wants to teach a 500-level graduate course and she has a M.S. degree and over 60 hours of PhD work, is just all but dissertation.

Chris
