I would say yes - must be enrolled in Spring 2026 to receive and use the scholarship. It will take the BoR some time to process the paperwork and so it may be at least February before the winners see any money.

Yes, the competitors must be enrolled. The awards are in the form of scholarships (not cash in hand), and so one must be a student to take advantage of those.

Jennifer (Tulane) said their competition this year will be in late January. However, we are not asking for winners of your local event - any two you nominate will be fine. However, this is an opportunity for earning some $$, so I suggested to Jennifer that if last year's winner and runner-up are still enrolled, they could compete in the LA-NEXT competition.

I am writing to provide (a) a gentle reminder about my email dated November 4, 2025 (Subject: Mark the date: LA-NEXT and 3MT - January 8, 2026) and (b) an update. The previous email included the following requests:

  1.  Please disseminate this information on your campus among graduate advisors and students.
  2.  Please nominate two competitors* from your campus to participate in the 3MT by Friday, December 12. [I know the timing is terrible; we hope to do better next year.]
  3.  Please share information about LA-NEXT with the researchers and research leaders on your campus and encourage them to attend.

Updates:

The winner, runner-up, and People's Choice awardee at the 3MT competition will receive scholarships (tentatively, $4000, $2000, and $1000) from the project. The project director has also agreed to cover the travel costs for the competitors.

I encourage you to name your competitors earlier than Dec 12 if possible. This will give us more time to get in touch with them to provide them additional information about the competition, discuss travel logistics, etc.
