We follow the same policy and process you describe in #1 below.  There’s been a lot of pushback from grad coordinators who want to make some exceptions to this.  I did get some info from one of the NACES agencies that they determine if a non-US 3 year degree is equivalent to a US 4 year (outside of Bologna) based on the length of the primary and secondary education in the country.  If primary and secondary total 13 years then a three year degree is equivalent to US 4 year bachelors because the total is 16.  (I don’t really agree but am just sharing.)



We are looking at “twinning” agreements with other countries to allow students to complete a three year degree outside the US then “transfer” to UNO and complete an additional year of undergrad leading into an accelerated masters.  Lots to work out on that front.

Dear colleagues:



I am looking for guidance on:



  1.  Applicants with 3-year degrees (usually international). I am told that we can accept these if the degree is from one of the countries that participate in the Bologna Process. In other cases (e.g., India, Nepal), I am told that the applicant must have four years of college (either a four-year degree or a three-year degree + one more year of college). What is your policy? Are you aware of any guidance on these matters from AACRO or US Dept of Education (or other govt agencies)?
  2.  I am aware that LSU recently admitted a student from Hyderabad who was started college in the second year of a four year degree, i.e., spent only three years in college. Apparently there is a 10 + 2 + 1 + 3 path where the 1 could be in a technical (Polytechnique) college.
  3.  Applicants who apply prior to earning their degree – if they meet our requirements, we admit them unconditionally, with the understanding that they will provide proof of earning the degree before enrolling in classes at Louisiana Tech. Our College of Business wants to admit these students conditionally, with the condition that they must earn the undergrad degree. That seems very counterproductive to me –  for one thing, it denies them financial aid; for another, if they get an unconditional admission from another institution, they won’t come to us.
