I second your thoughts on the Ruston conference.  Great job, Ramu!

With regard to time limits, I had put this issue for discussion before our Grad Council when faced with a student who wanted credit for courses over 20 years old. The GC decided to leave the 8-year rule as is and not impose any additional limits.  They said it depends on the course content/ department  and the Grad Dean has the discretion to grant exemption on a case-by-case basis.

PS.  The 20-year old courses were in Liberal Arts and some GC members felt that what may be appropriate in one discipline may not be appropriate in another discipline like for example, Computer Science.

Colleagues,

I hope everyone is headed to the end of the term with renewed energy after our wonderful gathering in Ruston.  Ramu was a fabulous host and set another high bar for future gatherings!

I would like some thoughts and wisdom on a situation.  A student began doctoral studies 2004 and attended consistently until 2008.  Student took a year off but returned and passed general exam in Spring 2014 (documented in SIS).  According to our SIS, the student has not been enrolled since Spring 2015 but there's some department conversation that a successful defense took place in 2019 (not documented in SIS).  Based on our catalog and ULS policy, ALL of the student's credit hours and general exam are outside the time limit.  The student wants to return, defend and/or submit the dissertation which s/he has been "working on" and graduate.  Clearly we would need to go through a time limit extension process for every course.  I cannot find a policy beyond the time limit policy which puts an absolute limit on ABD return-any thoughts and suggestions?
