[La-cgs] Definition of a transfer graduate student

Ramu,

As the “newbie” here, please take my thoughts with a grain of salt! I would agree that the student described in scenario A below should be classified as a transfer student but not the student in scenario B. Of course, this is all complicated by the policy that graduate students must earn at least 9 hours at UNO before they can apply for any credits to be transferred. So, we are classifying them as transfer students but not giving them the credits for at least one semester which is a bit awkward.

Nancy

Obadiah:

Yes, that is consistent with UL System policy. How do you define a transfer graduate student, or transfer graduate admission? Our discussions here are centered around two options:

a) Those who are currently enrolled in another graduate school and seek admission to Louisiana Tech (i.e., transfer to Louisiana Tech) without completing their current degree -- broad consensus exists that these applicants should be called transfer applicants.

b) Those who have at some point in the past attended another graduate school and left without earning a degree, perhaps worked for several years, and are now seeking admission at Louisiana Tech -- there is some hesitation in including these in the group of transfer students because they are not transferring from another institution at the time of admission. Of course, we will require official transcripts from all schools attended, as required by ULS policy. We may approve transfer credits later but that may have no impact on the admission decision.

Best regards,
Ramu

Our policy here at GSU states that to be admitted to the graduate program at GSU, a student who has attended a graduate school at another institution must be eligible for re-admission to that graduate school. In addition, the student must meet all requirements for graduate admission at GSU.

Dear LA Council:

We are trying to come up with a definition of a transfer graduate student, and it seems that there are policies at the UL System level and in our own Catalog about transfer admissions (GPA, good standing, eligibility to return, etc., etc.) but the definition is not clear.

Is it understood or implied that a "transfer admission" applies to a student who is enrolled elsewhere at the time of application to your institution, or does it also apply to someone who dropped out of college for a while and is now applying to you? I know that we require transcripts of all previous college work regardless of the current or prior enrollment status at the time of application.

Thank you.

Best regards,
Ramu
