At LSUS, we also have three categories of GAs - RA, TA, & SA. We are planning to extend the exemption to all three if the bill passes.

Yes, it is specific to GTA and GRA appointments.

Several years ago, we went through the process of defining these distinct roles -- GTA, GRA, GA (or as I think would be described by Carol as a GSA). We went through this process because the IRS allows for up to $5250 per calendar year in tuition waivers associated with GTA and GRA appointments to be excluded from taxable income. It is my understanding that tuition waivers from a GA or GSA appointment does not qualify for IRS exemption.

And, I wondered about Graduate Service Assistants. GSAs are not addressed.

You don't often get email from anthony.kunkel at nicholls.edu<mailto:anthony.kunkel at nicholls.edu>. Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>

Do anyone know if these exemptions are specific to GAs with teaching and/or research roles? Our majority are simply GAs, but we do have a small number that have teaching and/or research designations as well. The fact that they are specific to the roles has me thinking the GA must be a GTA or at GRA.

Let me know if anyone has any idea.

Thanks.

Tony

FYI. SB 76, which provides that grad students appointed as in GTA or GRA roles shall be exempt from mandatory student fees, was reported favorably, with no opposition, out of the House Ways and Means Committee this morning.
