Hello all -

I want to take a moment to address a big elephant in the room:
As we prepare for the upcoming ABET visit, maintaining clean, organized, and inspection-ready labs is a departmental priority.
Recent observations indicate that some labs are not being adequately cleaned and reset by students after use.
Faculty are expected to hold students accountable for cleaning and properly restoring the lab to its designated condition at the end of every lab session. Students should not leave workstations, equipment, tools, materials, or other areas in a condition that requires the next class or another faculty member to clean up after them.
Please ensure that students:

Clean and return their workstations to the appropriate condition after each use.
  *
Properly clean and store equipment, tools, and materials.
  *
Dispose of waste and unused materials appropriately.
  *
Return chairs, stools, and other items to their designated locations.
  *
Leave benches, tables, floors, and surrounding areas clean and free of clutter.
  *
Report any damaged or malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  *
Follow all laboratory safety and housekeeping procedures.

Faculty should inspect the lab at the end of each session and address inadequate student cleanup immediately. Students should understand that leaving the lab clean and orderly is part of their responsibility for using the facility.
This expectation applies every day, not only in preparation for the ABET visit. Our labs must consistently demonstrate a professional, safe, and well-maintained environment.
Please communicate these expectations clearly to your students and ensure that they are consistently followed. Faculty oversight and accountability will be important in maintaining the condition of our labs in the future.
