You may have meant to say "February meeting." The most recent set of
Minutes on the Board of Regents website is January, so your
information is new to me. Below my sign-off and the dashed line, I
am pasting an email I saw about this from Lupe Lamadrid to Jeannine
Kahn. However, please note that this concerns <u>undergrad
admissions</u>; if approved, the use of DuoLingo will no longer be
considered an "exception." I don't deal with UG admissions at all
but I understand that universities are allowed only a certain
percentage of "exceptions" in their UG admissions. At the graduate
level, universities (or at least the systems) appear to have some
autonomy in deciding what methods are used for determining English
proficiency. When we decided to accept DuoLingo for graduate
admissions, our Provost sent an email to the UL Systems informing
them (not asking for permission).<br>

continued use of Duolingo for international student proficiency
determination and placement. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Several campuses have been utilizing this
instrument under our Emergency Policy and have reached out to our
office regarding its continued use. Our staff is planning to
recommend the permanent addition of Duolingo to the Board of
Regents Minimum Admissions Standards Policy: <u>Guidelines for
Students Graduating from Non-US High School </u>(Under 25 Years
of Age; Item 2, page 5) at our February 23 meeting. </p>

campuses, while we still need Board approval, at least your EM
staff can advise students in the meantime. </p>

began accepting Duolingo nearly a year ago now (hard to
believe!!!!) during the pandemic, and we have continued to
do so. At their April meeting, the BoR voted to add Duolingo
permanently use Duolingo in addition to the TOEFL and IELTS
if accepted by the institution. Northwestern will continue
to utilize Duolingo.

score of 105) as a Covid-19 accommodation and have decided to
continue accepting it permanently. I personally find it more
useful than TOEFL or IELTS because we get a video interview
along with the score, and can actually see and hear the
candidate answering questions. This seems to be a better
indicator of their English communication ability than a number
on the score sheet.<br>
